Laboratory soil investigations

Soil characteristics play an important role in the selection of dredging equipment and in dredging operations. MTI Holland has its own soil mechanics laboratory where all soil characteristics relevant for dredging can be determined. To mention a few of the most important:
- Unconfined compression strength, tensile strength and specific weight for rock samples.
- Grain size distribution and abrasiveness for sand and gravel.
- Cohesion, plasticity and adhesion limits, specific weight, viscosity and organic matter content for clay, silt and peat respectively.
- We can determine required soil characteristics for you quickly and at moderate cost at our in-house laboratory.
The main activities of the soil specialists working at MTI Holland are:
- Research on soil behaviour on dredging equipment (estimation of cutting forces for dredging equipment, wear prediction models, slope stability analysis, data analysis & modeling)
- Soil laboratory for sample analysis (sand, clay, rock)
- Geospatial interpolation
- Geo-consultancy
- The training of IHC Merwede personnel and external clients of the Training Institute for Dredging
